Social media has become a huge part of society and we at Careline365 want to make sure that you know exactly what you are doing if you choose to join the internet sensation.
This week we take a look at Twitter and tell you everything you need to know about creating an account and making the most of the service.
Brief history of Twitter
Twitter turns 10 years old later this month. The platform was co-founded by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone and Noah Glass for a project for pod-casting company Odeo. Originally known as twttr, the platform was largely a text-based peer-to-peer messaging service.
Following financial troubles at Odeo, the group of founders decided to buy their new creation back from the investors at the company – acquiring the rights to Twitter in the process.
Over the next few years Twitter began to gain popularity, winning awards in the process. The first mainstream break through arguably came in 2009 when the first photo from the US Airways crash in the Hudson River was shared on the website. This ‘tweet’ broke the news of the incident before the traditional news outlets knew anything about it.
By the end of 2011 there were 100 million monthly active users with around one billion tweets being sent per week. Twitter’s bird logo was released in June 2012 and has become one of the most recognisable symbols around the world.
Twitter now has over a billion registered users across the globe and has become the favourite social media website for celebrities and sports stars to use in order to communicate with each other and their fans.
Joining Twitter
If you have decided to join Twitter then you will firstly need to make a visit to the Twitter website to click on the sign-up option. After clicking on this option you will be asked to fill in your personal details such as your full name, email address, phone number and a password for your account.
After doing this you will be able create your very own profile page. First of all you will be asked to create your very own user name. This will begin with the @ logo and can be anything you want it to be. The best option would be to use your name with a number to ensure that you friends and family can find you on Twitter.
After this you will be asked to add a profile picture, along with a little biography to go underneath it. Your profile picture could be one of yourself, or it could be a photograph of you and your friends. The biography will allow you to include your location, age and anything else you would like to include – such as your interests and occupation.
You can also add a larger header photo which will go along the top of your profile page. Many people like to set this as a photograph of their favourite football team or movie, the choice is yours.
Using Twitter
Once you are happy with your Twitter profile you are ready to begin ‘following’ and ‘liking’ people and their content. When you follow somebody on Twitter you will be able to see their profile page and any tweets that they share with the world.
Tweets allow you to share your thoughts with your followers and have a limit of 140 characters – so you will need to be clear and quick to the point. When you tweet you can include other users in the tweets by typing including their user name.
Other users can like, reply or re-tweet your tweets. A re-tweet will see your tweet appear on another user’s profile, either as it was or alongside a comment from the other user regarding your tweet.
Many events and news stories have special Hashtags which can help link everybody who is talking about that topic together. To do this you just need to add the hashtag to your tweet. For example if you were talking about a Formula One race you could tweet the following:
” I really hope that @JensonButton does well this season. This should be a good race to start the year. #AustralianGP #F1 “
This will allow all the other people that are talking about Formula One to see your tweet and interact with you about it. If you are really lucky then Jenson Button himself could react to your tweet as it would appear on his notifications page.
To find your friends, family or favourite celebrities on Twitter all you need to do is to search for their names in the search bar at the top of the page. To keep things private you can also send private messages to people that you are connected with on Twitter.
Twitter is a great way to see all of the latest news updates, to add and share photographs and to keep in touch with your friends and family.
