By sharing these stories we hope that we can show just how much of a difference a Careline Alarm can make to someone’s life. They can make all the difference in an emergency situation where, without the alarm, the elderly or disabled resident could be alone with nobody to help them.
For our first Case Study we spoke with 28-year-old alarm user Alison Coles, who suffers from two long-term health conditions and has needed to use her alarm on a few separate occasions.

Could you tell Careline365 a little bit about yourself?
I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome*, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardic Syndome** and I have a feeding tube – but none of these conditions stop me, they just make me more determined in life! I enjoy knitting despite my EDS creating dislocations and pain in my hands. Previously I have taken part in many forms of art and crafts but due to my changing health I have had to try other forms of this.
I used to work for private nursing homes or private people in their own homes with physical health conditions, challenging behaviour and learning disabilities.
Since leaving work on long-term sickness, I have worked on multiple courses (off my own back) to try and help me get back into work once my health is stable enough.
- *Ehlers Danloa Syndrome (EDS) is a group of disorders that affect the connective tissues that support the skin, bones, blood vessels, and many other organs and tissues. Defects in connective tissues cause the signs and symptoms of EDS, which vary from mildly loose joints to life-threatening complications.
- **Postural Orthostatic Tachycardic Syndrome (PoTS) is an abnormal increase in heart rate after sitting or standing up. It typically causes dizziness, fainting, sweating and other symptoms. In PoTS, the autonomic nervous system doesn’t function properly causing a drop in blood supply to the heart and brain when you become upright.
Why did you order a Careline Alarm?
The decision to order an alarm was partly due to the agreement with my social worker which would allow me to live alone with carers coming to see me throughout the day – rather than living in full-time care.
Another major factor behind the decision was the thought of my condition deteriorating. If this happened and there was nobody within distance to help me and I couldn’t reach the phone for example.
Spending so many months in ICU has made me very wary of anything that changes within my health as I know all to well that my condition could put me back in ICU once again.
Have you used your alarm yet?
I have used my alarm on multiple occasions after suffering from falls, anaphylaxis and PoTs episodes which wouldn’t pass. On some occasions I have required medical attention and the emergency services were contacted on my behalf.
The Care Team were quick to answer my call for help and they really went out of their way to reassure me throughout these incidents.
How does it make you feel knowing that you have an alarm installed at your home?
Having the alarm at home makes me feel more reassured and calmer about my well-being. I also feel much safer, having the alarm is such a great a confidence booster and is perfect to go alongside my helpful neighbours – who also make me feel quite safe when I am at home!
What message would you like to send to residents who don’t have an alarm?
With long-term health conditions, or regular falls, it’s a must to gain the confidence back that is needed to keep hold of what little control you have over your life once your body has taken over.
