On this day, 27 years ago, the Berlin Wall fell, marking the end of years of division in post-war Germany. We here at Careline take a look back at that historic moment.
Berlin Wall – The History
The construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961 was the result of tensions between the powers that held control of Germany after World War II: the UK, the USA, the Soviet Union and France. The close of the war saw Germany divided into four quadrants, each controlled by a different member of the Allies.
The aim was to supervise the reconstruction of Germany, hopefully allowing it to become self-sufficient again in the years to come. Tensions understandably arose due to Joseph Stalin’s desire to incorporate Germany into the Eastern Bloc.
This led to a split between the Ally-controlled sections of the country and the Soviet controlled section, and in 1949, East Germany became the German Democratic Republic, a communist state, while the West, the Federal Republic of Germany, became a capitalist society.
Unhappy GDR citizens flocked to the more prosperous West in huge numbers, most of them young and educated, which led to a dearth of professional, skilled workers. By the start of the 60s, this was having such a negative effect on East Germany that something had to be done to prevent it, and so in 1961, the Berlin Wall went up.
Berlin Wall – The Fall
It wasn’t until almost 30 years later, in 1989, that the wall would finally come down. East Germans exploited a change in Hungary’s border policy with Austria to escape to the West.
This taste of freedom sparked protests and demands for change, which culminated on November 9, when the leader of East Germany tried to relieve the pressures of the mass movement of people from East to West by letting some cross at checkpoints on the wall.
When people heard, thousands showed up and, fearing violence, the authorities were forced to open the border, and an era of division came to an end.
There were famously three concerts played on or near the wall in the late eighties: David Bowie in 1987, Bruce Springsteen in 1988 and David Hasselhoff in 1989. The latter would late (in)famously take partial credit for the fall of the wall, claiming his song ‘Looking for Freedom’ instilled hope in the divided Germans.
