Most of you may now know how to choose the best Personal Alarm and may also have an idea of how the alarm work. However, do you know the exact procedure when the alarm button is pressed? Due to the many different providers available on the market, the services can differ from one to the other and it is essential that you know exactly how the alarm will work for your loved one. A question we get asked often is:
What happens when the alarm is pressed?
As explained in our comprehensive guide, the alarm is activated when the red button on the pendant is pressed or via the base unit of the alarm. When this button is pressed, the alarm will use your landline telephone to place a call through to our 24/7 Emergency Care Team.
The operator who answers the call will firstly attempt to communicate with the alarm user through the microphone and speaker system which is incorporated into the alarm base unit. The operator will do this to find out exactly what the issue is and assess what kind of help is required. If the alarm user is unable to communicate through the alarm base unit, the operator will give them a call on either a landline or mobile number – whichever is preferred – just in case the alarm user happens to be in close proximity of the phone.
A member of the Emergency Care Team will always try to establish communication with the alarm user to begin with so they can deal with the situation as efficiently and appropriately as possible. They also do this to minimise any unnecessary call-outs, for example, if the alarm user presses the button by accident and is not aware.
The next step the operator would take is to call the alarm user’s nominated emergency contacts. We ask our customers for a list of emergency contacts and recommend having at least one contact who is usually able to attend the property within 45 minutes, along with a few more who have a key to access.
If an emergency contact is available to take the call, our Care Team will explain the situation and ask if the contact can attend the property and provide some assistance. However, if none of the emergency contacts are available or, if the situation is an emergency, the operator will call the local ambulance service and ask them to attend.
A lot of the time when the alarm is activated the alarm user may have had a fall, sustained no injuries, but can’t quite manage to get up off the floor by themselves. This is the kind of situation where we feel having emergency contacts is immensely beneficial for the alarm user. Emergency contacts are usually family or friends, who live close by and are people the alarm user feels extremely comfortable with. In contrast, if an ambulance is called for a non-emergency the wait time can potentially be several hours and causes a huge strain on the NHS and emergency workers.
